 The Medieval Diet - Ye Village Bakery

 Gingerbread Peasant Boys, Medieval Cookery

Recipe ‘tis about 3,500 calories

Tho this recipe contains a good whiff of sugary ingredients, many hath been replaced with healthier alternatives.  Enjoy a couple of cookies with a tall glass of ice box skimmed milk that hath 1 teaspoon of vanilla added into it’s contents.

Medieval Cookery - Ye Old Ingredients for Gingerbred Peasant Boys

4 Cups of Bread Flour
¼ Cup of Vegetable Shortening
½ Cup of Light Colored Brown Sugar
12 Packets of No Calorie Sweetener
1 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
Dash of Salt
1 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon of Ground Cloves
1 Teaspoon of Ground Nutmeg
1 Teaspoon of Ground Ginger
2 Tablespoons of Distilled White Vinegar
1 Teaspoon of REAL Vanilla Extract
½ Cup of Molasses
1 Hen Egg

THE WET

Cream sugar, shortening, egg, molasses, vanilla & vinegar in a very large bowl.

THE DRY

Combine flour, spices, salt & baking soda in a separate mixing bowl.

THE REST

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients & combine till smooth.  Allow to firm up in the refrigerator for several hours, or overnite.

Place dough on a lightly floured board & roll to about a ½ inch thickness.  Cut out using gingerbread boy cookie cutters that hath been dipped in a smidgen of flour.

Bake in a 375 degree preheated oven till done – about 5-7 minutes.
